Reality Check / Maxt Out XI / Major Chor Division (by xxboredom)
This isn’t a post about how much fun I had doing Maxt Out with Reality Check.
This is a post about how I found 17 people who took everything negative about this experience, threw it out the window, and made me love them.
.
.
.
It all started with one.
And when it starts with one it usually means that many are to follow.
It wasn’t just the rejections to our invitations that made me feel bad about things. I mean sure, rejection is never a good thing to feel, but at least most people were upfront and honest to our faces.
Going to another project? Okay, that’s fine. Still sucks, but it’s not like I’m going to hate you for it. That would just be stupid.
Don’t have the time? Too busy? Understandable. Nothing to be upset about.
Just no? All right. Can’t get mad at you for just saying no, right?
It wasn’t those rejections that had me feeling upset when I woke up in the mornings. It was the rejections that were done behind closed doors, the ones that were projected with excuses to our faces and then abandonment a few days later. It was the rejections that came when someone said ‘yes’ at first, emphasized their full commitment, and then a few weeks later they opted out because they got asked to someone else’s project. It was the rejections that came from people who were there for four or five practices and then, suddenly, never showed up again. And it was the rejections that came last minute, that blind-sided us, that left us with holes to fill and no time to do it in.
Those rejections made me feel one thing and one thing only: unsatisfactory.
When your numbers dwindle down from 30+ to a shaky 17 then how else would you feel?
I can’t tell you how many hours out of a day I spent just sitting in my room and wondering what I needed to do to prove myself worthy of a project. Everyone seemed to glean dancers so easily, so why was it difficult for Matt and Paul and me? Why was it so difficult for me? Maybe my choreography wasn’t good enough, or maybe my dancing wasn’t good enough, or maybe I was too soft as a leader, or maybe I was too harsh, or maybe I just wasn’t cut from that cloth, or maybe I wasn’t someone who had enough variety, or maybe I’d done something wrong to someone, or maybe I had just started out too late, or maybe people didn’t believe I could make a project work with my best friend and my boyfriend. I had help direct 35 dancers only a few months ago, so why was it only 2 of them wanted to dance with me? That must have meant I’d done something wrong, right?
Maybe we…maybe I…was just unsatisfactory in a way that I couldn’t immediately fix.
Dramatic?
Am I blowing things out of proportion?
Well, you wouldn’t know. You didn’t have to go through it. You didn’t have to sit there and hear how everyone else had so many people doing their projects while you were doing whatever it took to grasp on to your scant few.
But…
What I didn’t realize right away was…
I didn’t need to grasp on to those few.
The 17 dancers that shared that Maxt Out stage with me are some of the most beautiful people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting. When I came to practice on Fridays, usually after a long night at elecTRONica, they were there to make me laugh and make me smile no matter how tired or frustrated I was. They were hungry dancers, passionate dancers, innovative dancers, humble dancers, and genuine people. They made me feel wonderfully, exquisitely and uniquely satisfactory. And more.

The list is short, but it is one of the most powerful lists I’ve ever made.
These people made me feel better about myself when I felt like a shit dancer that no one wanted to perform with.
Straight up.
They are some of the most talented people I have ever met, some of the fiercest dancers I’ve ever seen, and yet every Friday they were there at the studio, ready to learn, ready to perform. With me.
Despite my obnoxious use of unnecessary adjectives and my penchant for flowering description, there aren’t enough words in the English language that can properly express just how amazing those 17 people are.
RC, I love you.

And RC, thank you.
Hope this will be a reminder to me in the future
